Kuminga's Offseason Future Under Spotlight: ESPN Expert Says Warriors Will Offer Max 3-Yr, $81M Deal, Nets Loom as Alternative

As the offseason approaches, Jonathan Kuminga’s next move has become a focal point. ESPN salary cap expert Bobby Marks notes the 22-year-old has limited options: re-sign with the Warriors or join the Nets. Marks suggests the maximum contract he would offer Kuminga is three years, $81 million, including a player option for the final year.
Like Josh Giddey, Kuminga is a restricted free agent, giving Golden State leverage amid a tight free-agent market. However, unlike Giddey—who found a role with the Bulls—Kuminga’s fourth season was a roller-coaster: from bench player to unclear role post-Jimmy Butler trade, to averaging 21 points in the Warriors’ second-round loss to the Timberwolves, his performance fluctuated wildly.
The Warriors will issue a $7.9M qualifying offer by June 29, allowing them to match any rival team’s offer sheet.
GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. said: "I know we can use him better, but speculating on contract terms or sign-and-trade scenarios? Honestly, I’m just guessing right now."
A $25M starting salary for Kuminga would let the Warriors stay under the second luxury tax apron while filling out the roster.
If they part ways, a sign-and-trade with the Nets is the most logical route.
The Warriors offered Kuminga an extension worth ~$30M AAV last offseason, but his camp sought a max or near-max deal. Kuminga gambled on boosting his value, but the gamble may have backfired:
2024-25 stats: 13.4 PPG, 51.3% shooting, 1.1 steals/0.7 blocks
Market reality: With limited cap space across the league, Kuminga may need to accept a deal below his initial asking price.
As Marks notes: "The Warriors control the narrative here. Either Kuminga settles for their offer, or the Nets overpay to pry him away—a risky play for both sides."
